Meet the Team: Amelia Oon – Bringing Stories to Life with Animation

At Main Paige Media, we’re lucky to collaborate with a talented network of creatives who help bring our clients’ stories to life. One of those creative powerhouses is Amelia Oon, our go-to motion designer. From slick transitions to full animated explainer videos, Amelia’s work adds a dynamic visual touch that elevates projects. In this newsletter, we’re sharing a behind-the-scenes chat on how she got into animation, what inspires her, and details about her work with our team.

Can you tell us a little bit about what you do for Main Paige Media?

Sure! I’m a motion designer, which means I create animated elements like lower thirds (the text or graphics that appear in the bottom third of a video screen), transitions, and sometimes full explainer videos. My background is in multimedia, so I do a bit of everything—graphic design, web design, and animation—but for Main Paige Media, I primarily focus on animation.

What does a typical collaboration with Paige look like?

It varies by project. For smaller projects, Paige might just need a few lower thirds or transitions. She’ll give me a quick brief, and I’ll send over a few style options. For larger videos, there’s more back and forth. Paige provides a script or storyboard idea, and I’ll develop a style frame to lock in the visual direction before jumping into animation.

Do you have a favorite project you’ve worked on with Main Paige Media?

One that stands out was a fully animated explainer video for a video captioning service. I got to do a lot of illustration for that project, and the brand had a limited color palette that really worked well with the art style. It was creatively satisfying, and I loved how it turned out.

How did you first get connected with Main Paige Media?

I met Paige in a Facebook group for women entrepreneurs in Boston during the pandemic. The group was hosting Zoom networking events, and we connected there. I’d just graduated from Northeastern and was living in Boston at the time. I’ve since moved to New York, but we’ve continued working together ever since—so it’s been about five years now.

How did you first get into animation?

I never expected to end up in animation. Growing up, I was more into music, I played piano and violin, and I was also really into web design. I started college as a computer science major because I had been coding HTML websites and thought I should pursue coding further. But it turned out I was more interested in the design side than the coding itself, although it has been useful in understanding After Effects expressions when animating.

When I switched majors, I took a class called “4D Foundations”—the fourth dimension being time—and that introduced me to animation. I thought it was fun and really enjoyed the people in the animation program. I’ve also always loved watching animated shows and movies, so it just clicked.

Speaking of animated movies, do you have a favorite?

Into the Spider-Verse is probably my favorite. It’s incredibly innovative in terms of visual techniques, and the textures and colors are amazing, especially on the big screen.

Any advice for someone interested in getting into animation?

There are tons of online resources—YouTube channels like Ben Marriott’s are great, and School of Motion also has a lot of helpful content. Beyond learning the tools, one of the most important things is having a good sense of timing. That might be where my music background comes in because good animation is all about rhythm and pacing.

Are there specific types of projects or clients you enjoy working with?

I’m really passionate about mission-driven work, especially for nonprofits. That’s something Paige and I are very aligned on. Outside of Main Paige Media, I’ve worked with a climate think tank, created branding and websites for Mass NOW, and designed annual reports for other nonprofit organizations. I love using visual storytelling to support causes I care about.

We’re so grateful to have Amelia on the team and can’t wait to see what she brings to life next. If your next video project calls for animation, know you’ll have this talented professional working with us behind the scenes!
